Deaf Connections Project

We launched an exciting new project called ‘Deaf Connections’ in May 2024. The project has been funded by Nottinghamshire County Council and aims to connect deaf people to enable them to make a difference to their lives.

The aims of the project are:

  1. To develop better social connection opportunities in Nottinghamshire areas where deaf, hard-of-hearing or deafblind people live
  2. Improve access to organisations so deaf, hard-of-hearing and deafblind people and their families have equal access and opportunities
  3. Provide opportunities for sharing and development of new skills – e.g. for living, technical things creativity and employment, plus skills to support good mental health and wellbeing
  4. Create better information networks – e.g. news and events that are happening locally and nationally, through Facebook, Instagram etc
  5. Support with signposting and connecting with other organisations or charities to share information

To further improve access in Nottinghamshire, we would also love to encourage deaf, hard-of-hearing and deafblind people to share their visions for setting up their own community groups or activities.

Planned coffee mornings

We had planned to set up coffee sessions in either mornings or afternoons across the Nottinghamshire boundaries of:

  • Bassetlaw
  • Gelding
  • Broxtrowe
  • Gelding
  • Newark and Sherwood
  • Mansfield
  • Rushcliffe
  • Ashfield

So far, we have organised coffee mornings in Arnold, Newark, Mansfield, Worksop, Beeston, Kimberley and West Bridgford – plus a range of community groups.

Find a community group near you.

The aim of the coffee mornings is to find out what you love doing in the community, what ideas you have and what you’d like to achieve for your community.

As part of the coffee sessions, I’ll chat with you and support you to set up a group or activity, which will be led by the group themselves, either for a short or long term.

We’d like to see better opportunities and access for the deaf community across Nottinghamshire. So I’ll also be contacting organisations within Nottinghamshire to improve accessibility, remove barriers and in turn make them more inclusive for deaf, hard-of-hearing and deafblind people.
