Nottinghamshire Deaf Society Health Awareness Project.

This is a partnership project between Nottinghamshire Deaf Society, Nottingham City Primary Care Trust and Nottinghamshire County Primary Care Trust covering the districts of Gedling, Rushcliffe, Broxtowe and Hucknall as well as Nottingham City itself.

The aim of the project is to provide Deaf Awareness Training to staff in the Primary Care Trusts and to improve access to primary healthcare services for Deaf patients living in those areas.

Deaf patients need to see tangible results i.e. Basic access needs met:

  • To know when it is their turn to see the Doctor
  • To understand information sent to them and information to display resources available for Deaf patients
  • To be able to make appointments easily in and out of hours
  • To be asked if require a BSL Interpreter and if yes, one to be booked willingly by PCT Staff when generating appointment
  • To be able to follow directional signs in PCT premises
  • To have their needs as Deaf patient highlighted and met in any referrals
  • To be treated equally by all staff

Our Health Awareness Worker:

Lisa Warnock - Health Worker

Lisa Warnock has been working at the Nottinghamshire Deaf Society since November 1987, having previously worked as a filing Clerk for an insurance company. Since joining the Deaf Society, Lisa has had a number of various roles including Information Officer, running Deaf Image Productions, Deaf Awareness Trainer and more recently Administrator before taking on the role of Health Awareness Worker / Deaf Awareness worker.

Lisa states that she has achieved plenty of qualifications whilst working at the Deaf Society. The one that has most benefitted her is the Open University course in Deaf Studies as it helped her realise things she was unaware of. Lisa says,"Nottinghamshire Deaf Society are keen to see me develop new skills and knowledge, but it can be very exhausting and in the end it is always worthwhile though."

Lisa was awarded a NIACE Adult Tutors Award in 2003 for giving Deaf Awareness Training to NHS Staff in Nottinghamshire and states her biggest achievement as not being able to escape from the Deaf Society....... Yet!

Lisa's hobbies outside of work include Walking, dining, socialising with friends, reading, playing Badminton and "Some" sport activities.
